Found Myself In My Grandmother’s Closet — From D.C to PG County (2024)
I had three conversations with my dad and his two sister, with the primry question — what’s a memory you have with one clothing item from your childhood? The intention was not to be exacting with this inquiry, instead, it is to allow each of my family members the opportunity to rememorize details that may be foggy or recall instances that may not be frequented — an exploration of the perforations of history.
In an effort to materialize the reconstructive nature of memory, each oral account resulted in a quilted “garment” inspired by their stories, alongside a seated portrait in which each indiviual is “re-encountering” the memory.
This work was part of a larger installation created during the Studio Museum in Harlem Artist-In-Residence program. The work was exhbited in Pass Carry Hold at MoMA PS1.
